Penguins re-sign forward Alex Nylander on one-year contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins generated headlines last week when they re-signed both goaltender Casey DeSmith and superstar defenseman Kris Letang

Pittsburgh held on to another one of its own at the start of the current midweek.

Per an official media release, Penguins general manager Ron Hextall announced on Monday that the club has re-signed forward Alex Nylander to a one-year contract. The two-way deal runs through all of next season and holds an average annual value of $750K for the NHL team.

The Penguins initially acquired Nylander from the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 5 and sent him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, where he remained for the rest of the season. In total, he notched 14 goals and 16 assists in 44 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

While with the Blackhawks and, previously, the Buffalo Sabres, Nylander appeared in a total of 84 regular-season NHL contests. He tallied 13 goals and 19 assists over those games and had 10 goals and 16 assists for Chicago in 2019-20.

Per Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Nylander missed all of the 2020-21 season because of a left knee injury and then began the 2021-22 campaign with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL before he was traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for forward Sam Lafferty.
