While Mike Sullivan’s job as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins is pretty safe, it’s possible he sees changes in his partners behind the bench.

The Penguins don’t seem keen on firing any of their assistant coaches, but a couple of them have been in discussions for other head coaching positions around the NHL.

First Mike Vellucci spoke with the Anaheim Ducks, and now Todd Reirden is in talks with the Calgary Flames.

According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Reirden is one of at least four candidates that could still be in the running in Calgary and was a finalist in their previous search.

Reirden has been behind the bench in the NHL since 2010 when the Penguins hired him as an assistant coach and he morphed into a defensive specialist.

The Washington Capitals named Reirden as their head coach in 2018-19 and he spent two seasons in that spot.

Following his departure from Washington, Reirden again joined the Penguins as an assistant and was later promoted to associate coach.

The Flames are one of the teams that found a new general manager this offseason and a new head coach has become their new order of business.

In his two seasons as a head coach, Reirden picked up an 89-46-16 record but never won a playoff series.
