Penguins' Tristan Jarry likely out Thursday vs. Bruins?

The curious case of Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry has more questions than answers heading into Thursday's game against the Boston Bruins.

Per Wes Crosby of the NHL's website and Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Jarry didn't skate during Wednesday's practice due to the upper-body injury he suffered in the first period of Monday's 2-1 win against the New York Islanders. Casey DeSmith replaced Jarry in that victory and is expected to get the start on Thursday.

Jarry, meanwhile, is "day-to-day," according to head coach Mike Sullivan. Sullivan added that medical personnel advised him to remove Jarry from Monday's matchup after the opening period.

"Casey's a real competitive guy," Sullivan told reporters. "I know he loves the game. He loves to work at his game. I just think with each year that he plays, he gains a little bit more experience. He becomes a more mature goaltender."

Per ESPN stats, DeSmith is second in the league with a 1.91 goals-against average, tied for second among eligible goalies with a .929 save percentage, and holds a record of 8-3-0 across 11 starts and 13 appearances. To compare, Jarry is 15-8-2, overall, and 12-3-1 in his past 16 starts.

As of Wednesday, Pittsburgh was tied for second on points (48) with the New York Islanders in the NHL East standings. The top four teams from each division qualify for the playoffs.
