PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed forward Colin White on waivers. With forward Noel Acciari being labeled day-to-day as he works his way back from a concussion, the Penguins need to open a roster spot.

Dropping White to waivers doesn’t immediately open the position for Acciari to return. Whether he clears or is claimed, the Penguins will have room to reinstate Acciari when he is ready.

White was initially seen as a viable fourth-line option since signing professional tryout in the offseason, but his stint in the NHL hasn’t been great. In 11 games played, White has not scored a goal or picked up an assist and is a minus-two.

Flipping between wing and center, White has spent most of his time on the Penguins’ fourth line. There was, however, a brief time where he slotted next to Evgeni Malkin on the second line.

Teams across the NHL have 24 hours to claim White and bring him to their organization. If he clears, the Penguins are free to move him to the American Hockey League with not issues.

A player who has cleared waivers does not need to be sent anywhere or taken off the roster right away. It’s possible White clears waivers and remains in the Penguins lineup against the Montreal Canadiens.
