Ryan Strome is making $4.5M on his current deal and is due a nice increase. Artemi Panarin’s favorite center would likely fetch well over $6M if he hits the open market. Of course, a deal of that size will hinder the Rangers cap maneuverability and make them prone to future offer sheets.
One source told me back in December, if the term is right, Strome may accept $5.75M. This is going to be a very interesting negotiation but if there was ever a player that may take a discount, it could be Strome.
Rangers won’t issue Strome an ultimatum
“I love being a Ranger, I think I fit in great here,” he said during training camp about his contract status. “I love the guys on this team and care so much about those guys. Whatever happens, happens. Everyone is really excited (about this season), and that’s my focus.”
The Rangers are cap crunched in 2022-23 and have to plan for Kaapo Kakko’s next deal this summer. They also have to reserve money for Alexis Lafrenière and K’Andre Miller in 2023-24. If Strome is willing to sacrifice money for security, maybe something can be done. He will turn 29 in July so the Rangers must also be careful with the number of years.
Late yesterday, Larry Brooks updated the situation and noted that preliminary numbers have been exchanged. He reported that they will not force Strome into signing by issuing an ultimatum to take it or we trade you at the deadline.
Lundqvist talks jersey retirement on Jimmy Fallon
Henrik Lundqvist made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night and discussed his upcoming jersey retirement ceremony.
“That’s the thing with the Rangers, they’re an Original Six team and take a lot of pride in their history,” Lundqvist explained. “You feel that as a player… And now to be part of that myself it’s a surreal feeling.”
“I walked up to where my family is going to sit and right there are all banners,” Lundqvist said, seeming a little overwhelmed. “It was a very special moment for me.”
Lundqvist, 39, ended his NHL career with a record of 459-310-96, a .916 SV% and a GAA of 2.43 with 64 shutouts. At Madison Square Garden on January 28, the franchise will retire Henrik Lundqvist’s iconic #30 to the rafters.
