Rangers stay alive with 5-3 victory over Penguins in Game 5; Pittsburgh still leads series 3-2

Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the New York Rangers outscored the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 the rest of the way, earning a 5-3 victory in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

The victory keeps the Rangers' season alive, as they now trail the Penguins 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.

After Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel opened the scoring in the first period, Kris Letang put the Penguins on top 2-0 7:58 into the second period.

Around the 15-minute mark of the second period, the Rangers would respond with three goals in less than three minutes. First, Adam Fox would get New York on the board at 15:11, followed by an Alexis Lafreniere tally at 16:41 to tie things up at 2-2. A minute later, Jacob Touba would backhand one through Penguins' goaltender Louis Domingue to give the Rangers its first lead of the game, 3-2. However, Pittsburgh evened things up again 13 seconds later on Guentzel's second goal, and the two teams entered the second intermission locked at 3-3.

At 2:53 into the third period, Filip Chytil scored the only power play goal of the game to give the Rangers the lead for good; Ryan Lindgren would add an empty-netter to seal the win.

Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin held strong early, making 29 saves off 32 Penguins' shots earning the win in net.

The Rangers will look to force a Game 7, traveling to Pittsburgh for Game 6 at 7 p.m.
