Rare Connor McDavid rookie card sells for more than $100K at auction

Connor McDavid is arguably the best player in the NHL, and a recent auction for one of his rookie cards essentially proves just how popular he is with the fans.

McDavid's 2015-16 Upper Deck "The Cup" rookie patch autographed card sold for $113,176 on Friday, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski , and it's a very special version of the card. Out of 99 cards made, this specific one was No. 97, which is McDavid's jersey number with the Edmonton Oilers, thus making it even more pricey.

That rookie card may be the highest a piece of McDavid memorabilia has sold for. Among other things currently for sale include a signed jersey for just over $1,200 and an autographed puck for around $500.

McDavid is perhaps the best first overall pick of the past decade. The 23-year-old center has notched 469 points in 351 regular-season games since debuting during the 2015-16 season and helped lead the Oilers to the Stanley Cup playoffs this season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

That rare rookie card may never hit the auction block again, unless, of course, McDavid is inducted into the Hall of Fame in the future, which, at this point, seems like a high possibility.
