Detroit Red Wings celebrate after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers at Little Caesars Arena Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Red Wings cruised to an easy win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night, and fans had their sights set on a different sporting event by the time the final horn sounded.

With roughly two minutes remaining in the Red Wings’ 3-0 victory, fans at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., broke into a loud “Jared Goff!” chant.

Obviously, those fans are looking forward to Sunday’s NFC Championship Game between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers.

Goff led the Lions to their first playoff victory since 1991 when he went 22/27 for 277 yards and a touchdown in a tough 24-23 over the Los Angeles Rams two weeks ago. He then went 30/43 for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Goff, who was viewed by many as a throw-in with the Matthew Stafford trade three years ago, has played virtually mistake-free football when it matters most.

Detroit fans finally have meaningful NFL games to root for, and they understand that Goff is a big reason for that. The fact that they were chanting for the quarterback at an NHL game says it all.
