Moritz Seider of the Detroit Red Wings has been awarded the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie for the 2021-22 season.

Seider was drafted by the Red Wings with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft. He spent the 2019-20 season playing in the AHL, went overseas to the Swedish Hockey League in 2020-21 and made his NHL debut this year. In 82 games, Seider scored seven goals and 50 points while logging a team-leading 23:03 of ice time per game.

Seider won with 170 first-place votes, while Trevor Zegras came in second with 15 first-place votes and Michael Bunting came in third with seven first-place votes. Lucas Raymond, one of Seider’s teammates in Detroit, also received a first-place vote, as did goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

Seider is the first Red Wing to win the Calder Trophy since Roger Crozier did so in 1964-65. Glenn Hall (1955-56), Terry Sawchuk (1950-51) and Jim McFadden (1947-48) are Detroit’s other Calder winners, while Carl Voss was the first to win the award in 1932-33.

He’s also the first German-born player to win the Calder Trophy.
