With Robby Fabbri expected to miss the rest of the season with a suspected torn ACL , the Detroit Red Wings recalled forward Taro Hirose from the American Hockey League on Friday afternoon.

The Red Wings also placed Fabbri on injured reserve. The 26-year-old forward ranks fifth on the team with 30 points (17 goals, 13 assists) in 56 games this season.

Hirose, 25, has spent the majority of the 2021–22 season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. He leads the Griffins with 45 points (14 goals, 31 assists) in 52 AHL games this year.

Hirose has also appeared in one game with the Red Wings in 2021–22. He played in 42 NHL games with Detroit between 2018–19 and 2020–21, scoring three goals and 16 points.

Born in Winnipeg before relocating to Calgary to play bantam and prep school hockey, Hirose subsequently suited up for the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Michigan State University. He signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings in 2019 following the conclusion of his junior year with the Spartans.

Hirose is currently signed to a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Red Wings and is scheduled to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this summer. With Fabbri on the shelf and Tyler Bertuzzi ineligible to participate in Detroit’s next three games, Hirose should get an opportunity to play in a scoring role.
