Red Wings' Robby Fabbri done for season with suspected torn ACL

The Detroit Red Wings endured a 6-5 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday but encountered a more emotional setback coming off that defeat.

Per Nicholas J. Cotsonika of the NHL's website, Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill told reporters Friday that forward Robby Fabbri won't play again this season due to the right knee injury believed to be a torn ACL he suffered on Thursday. He left the second period of that contest because of the issue.

"We suspect that 'Fabs' tore his ACL," Blashill remarked. "We're consulting with another specialist just to get a second opinion, but the expectation is that he'll miss the remainder of the season."

It's a brutal blow for Fabbri, who tore the ACL in his left knee in February 2017 and then didn't play the subsequent campaign after he reinjured the knee during training camp. According to ESPN stats, the 26-year-old began Friday fifth on the Red Wings with 30 points and fourth on the team with 17 goals this season.

"I feel absolutely terrible for him," Blashill added. "Not only has he had to grind through multiple ACL injuries in the past, he's also had to grind through and did an unreal job, I think, of getting himself back to a spot where he played without any fear of injury and played with that relentless nature that he's got to play with to be successful."

The 24-27-7 Red Wings next play at the Calgary Flames on Saturday evening.
