The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Taro Hirose to a two-year contract extension.

The club announced the deal on Saturday afternoon. Hirose, 25, was set to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this July.

Hirose originally joined the Red Wings near the end of the 2018–19 season as an NCAA free agent from Michigan State University. The 5’10”, 162-lb. left wing appeared in 10 games with Detroit to finish that season, scoring seven points (one goal, six assists).

The Calgary product has split the last three seasons between the Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. He tied for second on the 2021–22 Griffins in scoring with 53 points (15 goals, 38 assists) in 59 games.

Hirose joined the Red Wings again late in the 2021–22 season and ultimately suited up for 15 games with the team, scoring one goal and four points while averaging 10:40 of ice time.

While the financial terms of Hirose’s new contract have yet to be released, he played the 2021–22 season on a one-year, two-way deal. Hirose’s most recent deal with the Red Wings paid him an $850,000 salary in the NHL and $190,000 in the AHL.
