The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Turner Elson for the rest of the 2021–22 season, the club announced on Monday.

Elson, 29, is a 5’11”, 185-lb. center who has spent the last five seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. He has 21 goals and 45 points in 73 AHL games with the Griffins this season.

Elson started his professional career in the Calgary Flames organization back in 2011, eventually making his NHL debut with the team (and recording an assist) at the end of the 2015–16 campaign. To date, Elson has only appeared in one NHL game.

An undrafted player, Elson has set AHL career highs in virtually every offensive category this season and serves as an alternate captain with the Griffins. Before having his contract upgraded to the NHL, Elson was on an AHL deal for this season.

The Red Wings have two games left to play this season and it remains to be seen whether Elson will play in either of them. They’ll return to action in Toronto on April 26 before closing out the year in New Jersey on April 29.
