In what is quickly becoming a Canucks-themed podcast, 32 Thoughts gave an update on Vancouver Canucks right-shot defenceman Luke Schenn on their Monday episode.

Elliotte Friedman spoke about many in the industry believing that Luke Schenn will be the next player around the league to be traded.

“I have heard the Schenn one could happen at any time,” Friedman said when asked what he’s hearing about Luke Schenn. “The way he plays, he risks getting hurt because he plays a tough game. I heard that when he missed the game this week, things kind of accelerated. Like people were saying, ‘okay, we better get him because we don’t want him getting hurt there’. And I think Vancouver’s like ‘we don’t need him getting hurt here’. I do think that this accelerated. It’s one of those really tough things because I had people say to me yesterday, ‘I think it’s really close’. But then other people will remind you that it’s not done until it’s done.”

On top of the injury scare to Schenn, the defenceman’s wife is expecting a baby in the coming weeks. Friedman said that he believes the Canucks are taking Schenn’s wife’s pregnancy into consideration on the trade situation.

Schenn is up to three goals and 15 assists through 52 games this season. The 33-year-old right-shot defenceman is a free agent after this season and carries an $850,000 cap hit.

Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali also spoke about what he’s heard about the Schenn situation.

He mentioned that the plan is still for Schenn to be in the lineup for the Canucks on Monday night as they play the Red Wings but that this is a fluid situation and things could change as the day goes along.

Friedman then joined Donnie and Dhali on Monday afternoon to chat more about the topic of Schenn.

“Everybody knows what the price is and everybody knows who’s interested,” said Friedman.

The two teams we have heard rumoured to be the most interested in Schenn are the Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames. Some other teams who have been mentioned are the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs.

It sounds like the Canucks are nearing a trade for Schenn and this will be a story we are following closely for the next few days.
