In advance of their Tuesday meeting with the Nashville Predators, the Calgary Flames have reportedly placed a player on the waiver wire. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the club has placed forward Dryden Hunt on waivers. If Hunt clears, he would be eligible for assignment to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.

Hunt, 27, originally joined the Flames via a deadline day trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs last spring. He subsequently signed a two-year, two-way deal worth $775,000 at the NHL level. Hunt had a pretty effective training camp, but he’s been a spectator for seven of the Flames’ first 11 games (and looks to be in the press box against Nashville) and it makes more sense for him to be playing rather than idling. He has zero points in four NHL games so far this season.

A product of the Western Hockey League that can play both wings, Hunt has played 206 NHL games between stints with Florida, Arizona, the NY Rangers, Colorado, Toronto and Calgary. He’s a good, versatile veteran pro forward. He may not be needed for the big club right now, but with the way injuries go they may need him again in the future, and having him playing in the AHL and helping the club’s prospects could pay dividends.

The Flames currently have a full 23-player active roster – two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards, including Hunt – and three players on the injured list (Oliver Kylington, Kevin Rooney and Jakob Pelletier).
