Report: Golden Knights agree to extension with goaltender Robin Lehner

The Vegas Golden Knights, down 2-1 in the Western Conference Final versus the Dallas Stars, have a "handshake agreement" with goaltender Robin Lehner on a five-year contract extension that carries a $5 million average annual value, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

Lehner denied the rumor while speaking with reporters on Friday, via Wyshynski:

"It's kind of annoying that we are here in the conference final and people are saying things they don't know.

"It's just adding on to this thing that's going on here. If it would have been finalized, it would have been finalized. But it's not. I'm here to win a Cup, not discuss this stuff."

Vegas acquired the 29-year-old ahead of the February trade deadline after first-choice netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, who turns 36 years old in November, struggled to routinely find his best form during the regular season until the league halted play on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Fleury generated headlines in August when his agent tweeted a picture of the goalie with a sword in his back, an apparent shot at the Golden Knights after the three-time Stanley Cup winner was relegated to backup behind Lehner during the NHL resumption.

As Wyshynski wrote, Lehner started in 14 of the club's first 18 postseason contests.

Fleury signed a three-year, $21 million contract extension with Vegas in July 2018.
