Report: Oilers' Duncan Keith retiring after 17 seasons

Three-time NHL All-Star and two-time James Norris Memorial Trophy winner Duncan Keith is retiring after 17 seasons, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

Keith, who turns 39 next week, spent 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks before he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers during the 2021 offseason. In his one season with Edmonton, Keith recorded one goal and 20 assists in 64 games and the team was plus-20 with him on the ice.

In June, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers asked Keith to inform the team by July if he planned on returning to play the 2022-23 season. Keith was due to count $5.5 million against the team's salary cap next season. While the Oilers will get a salary cap reprieve from Keith's decision, the Blackhawks will lose a chunk of their available cap space.

During his time with the Blackhawks, Keith helped the team to three Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He twice won the Norris Trophy, recognizing the top defenseman in the league, and received the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2015 for being the most valuable player of the postseason.

Keith finishes his career with 105 goals, 520 assists, and 1,628 blocks.
