Report: Penguins could trade Matt Murray to Oilers

For the second time in recent memory, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a surplus at goaltender.

Enter the Edmonton Oilers, a side reportedly looking for help at the position.

On Thursday, TSN's Pierre LeBrun tweeted that the Penguins are shopping two-time Stanley Cup winner Matt Murray. LeBrun wrote the Pens want a first-round draft pick for the 26-year-old who was relegated behind Tristan Jarry during Pittsburgh's brief stay in the 2019-2020 postseason, but the analyst also added Edmonton isn't yet prepared to match that value.

Per David Staples of the Edmonton Journal, the Oilers positioning themselves to bring veteran goalie Mike Smith back for another year could merely be posturing in an attempt to get Pittsburgh to reduce the club's asking price for Murray. Smith, 38, will be a free agent once the Stanley Cup Final ends.

As explained by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, both Murray and Jarry are pending restricted free agents. The Penguins allowed three-time Stanley Cup champion Marc-Andre Fleury to be claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights in June 2017 so Pittsburgh could start Murray in net.
