Report: Stars want to re-sign goaltender Anton Khudobin

The Dallas Stars hope to re-sign the goaltender who carried them all the way to the Stanley Cup Final this past season. 

Stars general manager Jim Nill reportedly contacted Anton Khudobin's agent, Kent Hughes, on Thursday to relay the club's interest in keeping the netminder on board, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. 

LeBrun adds that keeping Khudobin wouldn't mean the Stars would attempt to trade Ben Bishop. They reportedly intend to keep both goaltenders in the fold for the upcoming campaign. 

Khudobin played very well in place of Bishop throughout the postseason, earning a .917 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average. In the same number of games, Khudobin faced 71 more shots than Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, making his run to the Cup Final even more impressive. 

The 34-year-old is set to become a free agent when the market opens on Oct. 9 and is coming off a two-year, $5 million deal.

If Dallas isn't able to retain Khudobin, the Stars have a pretty capable rookie in Jake Oettinger. The young goaltender made his NHL debut in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. He also made an appearance in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, stopping all eight shots faced in those two appearances. 

There's also the option that Dallas looks to the market to replace Khudobin if he walks. Robin Lehner, Jacob Markstrom and Corey Crawford are among the goaltenders set to be available on the open market.
