The Buffalo Sabres have claimed forward Tyson Jost off waivers from the Minnesota Wild, according to multiple reports.
Jost, 24, registered zero goals and three assists in 12 games with the Wild to begin the 2022-23 regular season. He’s in the final year of his existing contract (that carries a $2 million cap hit) and is eligible to become a restricted free agent next July.
The Colorado Avalanche originally selected Jost in the first round (No. 10 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The 5-foot-11, 187-pound center played parts of six seasons with the Avalanche to start his NHL career before being dealt to the Wild for Nico Sturm ahead of the 2022 trade deadline.
In 80 games split between Colorado and Minnesota in 2021-22, Jost amassed eight goals and 20 points. He did not record a point in six games with the Wild in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Jost topped out at 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) in 70 games with the Avalanche during the 2018-19 regular season. He also managed a career-high three goals in 12 games with Colorado during the 2019 playoffs.
The Sabres currently rank seventh in the NHL’s Atlantic Division with a 7-10-0 record and 14 points through 17 games this season. They’ve lost seven consecutive games (all in regulation) and look to be without injured forward Zemgus Girgensons as they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Jost has 47 goals and 112 points in 354 career games with Colorado and Minnesota over parts of seven NHL regular seasons. He’s added six goals and 10 points in 46 career playoff contests.
Eight players have now been claimed off waivers since the deadline to set opening rosters passed in early October: Jonas Johansson (ARI to COL), Lukas Sedlak (COL to PHI), Dryden Hunt (NYR to COL), Kieffer Bellows (NYI to PHI), Nicolas Aubé-Kubel (TOR to WSH), Magnus Hellberg (OTT to SEA), Rudolfs Balcers (FLA to TB) and Jost.
