Sabres defenseman Will Borgen out six to eight weeks with broken forearm

If it wasn't for bad luck, the Buffalo Sabres wouldn't have much luck at all this winter.

Buffalo confirmed on Tuesday that defenseman Will Borgen is expected to be out six to eight weeks with a fracture in his right forearm that he suffered in this past Saturday's 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Borgen underwent successful surgery to repair the issue.

As Anthony Sciandra noted for SB Nation, Borgen had become an important member of Buffalo's defensive rotation, in part because other options were sidelined. The Sabres announced on Monday that Jake McCabe won't play again this season due to injuries to the ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee. Rasmus Ristolainen, meanwhile, hasn't played since Jan. 31 because of a worrisome bout with COVID-19.

According to Lance Lysowski and Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, it's unknown exactly when Ristolainen will return to the active roster.

Buffalo began the month on a coronavirus-related pause and only returned to the ice for competitive action on Feb. 15. The Sabres fell to the New York Islanders on Monday to remain in last place in the East. They play at the Devils on Tuesday evening.
