The San Jose Sharks have traded for Dallas Stars forward Ty Dellandrea in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round selection (originally held by Winnipeg), according to the team announcement today.

Dellandrea, 23, was selected by the Dallas Stars with the 13th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. The six-foot-two, 190-pound forward appeared in 42 games for the Stars last season, tallying two goals and seven assists for nine points. Additionally, Dellandrea ranked sixth among Stars forwards in hits with 63 and was fifth in shorthanded time on ice with 78 minutes.

Dellandrea also has spent some time in his career in the American Hockey League. In 87 games with the Texas Stars, Dellandrea recorded 27 goals and 32 assists for 59 points.

This trade marks the beginning of a hectic offseason for Sharks General Manager Mike Grier. His likely strategy involves safeguarding anticipated first overall pick Macklin Celebrini and recently signed 2023 first-rounder Will Smith by surrounding them with gritty players known for their strong leadership presence to mentor the younger players in the locker room.

While Dellandrea is relatively young to be considered a leadership presence in the Sharks locker room, the forward served two years as Captain of the Flint Firebirds in the Ontario Hockey League. Dellandrea was awarded the OHL Commitment Award in 2019-2020, given to “the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community.”
