By now, everyone has heard the story of how the Colorado Avalanche were able to match the offer sheet the New York Rangers gave Joe Sakic way back in 1997.
Next year, fans will be able to watch a documentary on the whole ordeal.
Saving Sakic follows the saga of Colorado Avalanche Chairman/CEO Charlie Lyons, as he looks to secure big dollars to save his all-star captain, Joe Sakic. After an unprecedented offer from the New York Rangers to Sakic—the captain and lifeblood of Lyons’ beloved NHL franchise—Lyons has seven days to find $15 million or lose everything he’s spent years building. Lyons has no chance to beat the ticking clock, but somehow, he finds a lifeline from an unexpected place: Hollywood.
The documentary, along with an additional documentary, Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle, is being put together by Prime Video in Canada, in collaboration with NHL Productions, and will be available on that streaming platform. Both documentaries will be available to ESPN+ subscribers in the United States as part of the platform’s offering of original NHL content.
Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic are directed by Jay Nelson for NHL Productions. Steve Mayer, Ross Bernard and Craig Axelrod are executive producers for NHL Productions. Gary Cohen is executive producer for Triple Threat.

We think the authentic and entertaining narratives in Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic will resonate with our hockey audience but most importantly, beyond. We can’t wait for everyone to see these two documentaries.”
While no specific release date was given for either documentary, both are set to premiere in 2024.
Obviously, the documentary on Sakic will be required viewing for Avalanche fans, but I’m interested in the Daigle documentary as well. He’s one of the more interesting figures to come through the NHL over the last 35 years.
