Scott Mayfield has missed the last month of action for the New York Islanders and will not be back for the rest of the season after the team announced on Tuesday morning that the defenseman successfully underwent surgery to treat a lower-body injury.

Mayfield, 31, is expected to make a full recovery following the surgery and not have any issues training this summer.

Mayfield last appeared in a game on Feb. 22 and has dealt with injuries from the outset of this season. He blocked a shot off his foot on opening night, forcing him to miss the Islanders’ next 17 games. He later suffered an injury when a shot hit him in the hand in early December, resulting in an eight-game absence.

In total, Mayfield appeared in 41 games for the Islanders this season with five assists while averaging 18:46 of time on ice per game.

Mayfield is in the first year of a seven-year contract he signed with the Islanders last offseason. The contract is worth $3.5 million annually and comes with a full no-movement clause during its first four seasons.
