Free agent defenseman Scott Mayfield signs a contract with the New York Islanders. The deal is reported to be a seven-year deal but the dollar amount was not announced.

Scott Mayfield Gets New Deal

The Scott Mayfield contract is official. Mayfield has spent his entire 10-year career playing for the New York Islanders. He was a big part of New York’s back-to-back trips to the Eastern Conference Finals, playing in all 42 games during that span. This season saw Mayfield reach career highs across the board. In 82 games, he registered six goals and 18 assists for 24 points.

The former second-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Denver, Mayfield played parts in the first four seasons in New York before breaking through in 2017-18. After coming off a contract that paid him $1.45 million AAV, Mayfield cashes in on the open market with a new seven-year deal. This contract not only benefits Mayfield, but also his new club.

What This Means for the Team

The Scott Mayfield contract is great for the team. Throughout his tenure with the Islanders, Mayfield stood out as a solid, defence-first defenseman. He has contributed slightly in offence but earns his money in the neutral and defensive zones and on the penalty kill. Mayfield’s other asset is his size. At 6’5″ and 223 pounds, Mayfield has the frame that teams love to have on the back end, especially during the postseason. Mayfield played top-four minutes last season, averaging 21:02, and was often paired with Adam Pelech. He fits in nicely on the Islanders as a ride-sided, physical defenseman, who can eat up heavy defensive minutes at both 5v5 and on the penalty kill. Being able to plug him in any situation is ideal. Mayfield is a player with playoff experience and has played tough minutes, earning his new deal with the Islanders.
