Seattle Kraken draft pick Eduard Sale Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Kraken drafted Czech prospect Eduard Sale No. 20 overall in the first round of Wednesday’s NHL Entry Draft.

Sale was once considered a shoo-in for a top-ten selection, but late risers and an inconsistent season for HC Kometa Brno in the Czech Extraliga caused his star to fall in the leadup to the draft. Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis ranked him the 23rd most-intriguing prospect in his final draft rankings, down from ninth back in October.

Still, if Sale can put together his offensive tools, his selection at No. 20 could be remembered as a steal down the line.

Though his Extraliga numbers (7G, 14P in 43GP) do not jump off the page, Sale has been a dominant scorer at youth levels throughout his burgeoning career. Over two trips to the IIHF World Junior Championships from 2022 to 2023, the winger posted five goals and 15 points in 11 games.

“Consistency was an issue for Sale, especially in the second half after the World Junior Championship,” noted Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Ellis. Sale showed enough big-game potential at that event, though, that I’m still quite intrigued. He’s best when he’s being deceptive, which comes more with confidence. I do wonder if he will go to the AHL and follow a similar route as Buffalo’s Jiri Kulich, which could be beneficial.

Sale is an aware passer with polished shooting mechanics and if he can find his confidence in the pro ranks, he could be a complete offensive package on an NHL power play.

Because the Kraken did not draft Sale from the CHL, he could transition to AHL hockey next season in order to adjust to North American physicality. Alternatively, another season in Czechia could allow Sale to refine his offensive tools without getting lost in the pace of the AHL.

Whatever the Kraken decide, they could have one of the best value picks in the draft if they properly cultivate Sale’s talents.
