The Vancouver Canucks have traded defenseman Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators for a third-round pick.

The Canucks appear to be trying to offload some of their bad contracts, and they found a taker in Ottawa for Hamonic’s. The defenseman is currently in the first year of a two-year deal with a $3 million cap hit.

Hamonic was in his second season with the Canucks, signing with them last season after impressing on a professional tryout. He previously played for the New York Islanders, who drafted him in the second round in 2008, and the Calgary Flames.

Hamonic has three goals and seven points in 24 games this season, but he was better-known as a reliable defensive defenseman in his prime. That said, the 31 year old has seen better days, with a 46.59% CF% and 44.53% xGF% at even strength this season.

He joins a Senators team well out of a playoff spot this season, but looking for a veteran defenseman to add a bit more stability for next season, when the team has aspiring hopes to be more of a contender.

The third-round pick coming back is a 2022 pick, and is the Canucks' own third-round pick. They had previously traded that pick in the 2020 offseason to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nate Schmidt, who then dealt that pick to Ottawa along with Nick Holden for Evgenii Dadonov.
