Senators name former broadcaster Pierre McGuire senior VP of player development

The Ottawa Senators have named Pierre McGuire as senior vice president of player development, the team announced Monday.

McGuire will work closely with general manager Pierre Dorion and owner Eugene Melnyk.

"We are excited to add Pierre to our hockey management group. His experience will be instrumental as we continue to build an elite team," Melnyk said. "Pierre's knowledge of the game and its players is highly regarded, and I am confident that he will positively assist our team as it progresses to the next level."

The 59-year-old has spent the last 24 years as a broadcaster for TSN and NBC. Before that, he served as a head coach, assistant coach and scout for various NHL, ECHL and college clubs.

While working for NBC, McGuire sought to become a general manager in the NHL. He interviewed with the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning for their past GM vacancies. He was also rumored to be a contender for the Senators' GM job in 2011.

The Senators finished second to last in the NHL's all-Canadian North Division last season, posting a 23-28-5 record. Ottawa has not made the playoffs since the 2016-17 campaign and has been in a rebuild ever since.
