The Ottawa Senators will forfeit a first-round pick for their role in the July 2021 trade of Evgenii Dadonov to Vegas and the subsequent, invalidated March 2022 trade involving the same player between the Golden Knights and Anaheim, the NHL announced Wednesday.

"Ottawa will forfeit its first-round draft pick in one of the 2024, 2025 or 2026 drafts," the league said in a release. "The determination as to which pick will be forfeited will be made by Ottawa within 24 hours of the conclusion of the draft lottery for that year. The league will have no further comment on the matter."

The Senators traded Dadonov to Vegas for defenseman Nick Holden and a third-round draft pick on July 28, 2021. Ottawa, however, failed to inform Vegas that Dadonov had a 10-team no-trade clause in his contract, thus creating trouble at the 2022 NHL trade deadline.

Just prior to that deadline on March 21, 2022, the Golden Knights sent Dadonov and a second-round draft pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman John Moore and Ryan Kesler's contract. That deal, however, was canceled by the NHL because Dadonov had the Ducks as one of the teams on his no-trade list.

"We appreciate the league's diligence on this matter and respect the decision," the Golden Knights said Wednesday. "The club will have no further comment."

Dadonov, 34, has three points (two goals, one assist) in seven games this season with the Dallas Stars.

He has 301 points (133 goals, 168 assists) in 493 career games with the Florida Panthers, Senators, Golden Knights, Montreal Canadiens and Stars.
