Sharks turned down several massive offers for Timo Meier before trade to Devils

On Sunday, the San Jose Sharks traded Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils but not before reportedly playing hardball with several teams.

While Meier drew plenty of suitors, the Sharks recently rejected two massive deals for the talented forward, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

While Seravalli clarified that the offers were in exchange for Meier and other assets, the packages were significant. One proposal included first- and second-round draft picks with a top prospect, while the other featured multiple first-rounders and a mid-tier prospect.

It's unclear which teams made offers for Meier. However, along with the Devils, the Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights were linked to Meier ahead of Sunday's trade to New Jersey.

Ultimately, the Devils came away with Meier in a deal that took nearly four hours to become official. According to Mike Morreale of NHL.com, the Sharks will receive three draft picks, including a conditional 2023 first-rounder, and four players for Meier. Meanwhile, the Devils acquired Meier, with 50 percent of his salary retained by the Sharks, along with four players and a draft pick.

The 26-year-old should give the Devils an instant scoring boost. Through 57 games this season, Meier has 52 points, scoring 31 goals and dishing out 21 helpers. The Devils also hope Meier's addition can help the team close the cap in the Metropolitan Division. Entering play Sunday night, the Devils (39-15-5) trailed the Carolina Hurricanes (39-11-8) by three points for the division lead.

Drafted ninth overall by the Sharks in the 2015 NHL Draft, Meier made his NHL debut during the 2016-17 campaign and played parts of seven seasons in San Jose. Meier leaves the Sharks ranked ninth in franchise history in goals (154) and 10th in career points (316).
