The Dallas Stars will announce on Wednesday that Peter DeBoer will be their new head coach.

The Stars had a coaching vacancy after previous head coach Rick Bowness stepped down from the position following the team’s elimination in the first round to the Calgary Flames. Bowness coached the Stars to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final after taking over the role from Jim Montgomery, who was fired for unprofessional conduct.

The Stars will be the fifth team that DeBoer has coached in his career. He previously coached the Vegas Golden Knights, which he helped to back-to-back conference final appearances before he was fired for missing the playoffs in 2022. He also was the head coach of the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks, the latter two which went to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season with the teams. In 1,015 games coached, he has a 513-379-123 record and a 56-47 record in the playoffs.

That’s one task completed with a few more to go in this offseason for the Stars as they look to return to the Stanley Cup Final. They currently have over $20 million in cap space, with Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger pending restricted free agents and John Klingberg heading to unrestricted free agency.
