Elliotte Friedman noted during this most recent 31 Thoughts  article that there’s interest in Vancouver Canucks’ forward Tyler Motte. Teams have apparently called to inquire about the depth center who has developed a bit of reputation as a decent playoff performer.

A player who brings a lot to the Canucks when he’s in the lineup, Motte certainly isn’t untouchable and the Canucks have been playing a bit better hockey, even with him out due to an injury. If Motte is generating interest from other teams, it’s likely the Canucks are at least willing to listen.

Motte played well in last year’s playoffs and speculation is that teams believe he could do so again. He’s on a relatively inexpensive contract — $1.225 million price tag this season and next — and GM Jim Benning could be in a position to land a good asset in return since power forwards are in high demand.

What About Nate Schmidt?

Friedman thinks there have been some inquiries about defenseman Nate Schmidt as well but the NHL insider doesn’t believe there’s much interest by the team to move him.

Schmidt was acquired during the offseason for relatively little as the Vegas Golden Knights cleared cap space. More than that, his $5.95 million per season deal that is signed through 2024-25 and he’ll have less teams showing interest or making good offers.

Schmidt also has a has 10-team no-trade condition as part of his contract and he’s one of the club’s best blueliners. Should they decide to move him, the team would definitely have a massive hole that needs filling.
