A total of three players were claimed off waivers on this 2024 NHL Trade deadline day. William Lagesson, Boris Katchouk and Tobias Bjornfot were all claimed off waivers on Friday. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman broke the news on Friday afternoon.

Trio Claimed on NHL Trade Deadline Day

William Lagesson was claimed off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks. He was put on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Katchouk got claimed by the Ottawa Senators after being put on waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks. Finally, Bjornfot was picked up off waivers by the Florida Panthers after being placed there by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Lagesson has yet to score this season, but did have four assists in 30 games this season. The Swede split time between the Leafs and the AHL Toronto Marlies. Katchouk had five goals and four assists for nine points in 38 games. However, he also played a handful of games with Rockford in the AHL. Bjornfot has only played a couple of games this season with the Golden Knights, but also just a handful of games with Henderson of the AHL.

All three were defencemen that didn’t see a lot of ice time and sometimes is a numbers game when it comes to salary or personnel.

What It Means

Hopefully all three players can get a new start with their new teams. All three defenders are likely to get some sort of opportunities with their new clubs. Florida has picked up defencemen from scrap heap before, but they turned out well.

Anaheim and Ottawa are young teams that will give chances to their recent claims. Both teams won’t make the Stanley Cup Playofffs, but will both Lagesson and Katchouk will get a chance to shine with their new teams. NHL Trade Deadline Day is an opportunity for teams and players to refresh.
