Tom Renney will step down from his role as Hockey Canada’s chief executive officer on July 1.

Taking over the role in his place will be Scott Smith, who currently serves as Hockey Canada’s president and chief operating officer.

In 2014, Renney was selected to be the president and CEO of Hockey Canada. Two years later, he stepped down from his position as president and was replaced by Smith, but Renney stayed on as Hockey Canada’s CEO.

Renney’s experience with Hockey Canada dates all the way back to the early 1990s. After two successful seasons as the head coach of the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, Renney was hired to coach the Canadian National Team. He led Canada to a silver medal at the Lillehammer Olympics in 1994, as the team fell to Sweden in the final.

Renney also had multiple gigs as a coach in the NHL. He coached the Vancouver Canucks for two seasons, the New York Rangers for five seasons, the Edmonton Oilers for two seasons, and he was an associate coach with the Detroit Red Wings for two seasons.

Over his eight years guiding Hockey Canada, the program has seen a considerable amount of success at both men’s and women’s tournaments. Beyond multiple World Junior and World Championship victories, Canada’s men’s team won gold at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, and Canada’s women’s team won gold at the Olympics in 2014 and 2022.
