The 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend in Toronto doesn't officially begin until Feb. 1 but that hasn't stopped the league from promotional kickoff events leading up to the league's annual exhibition showcase.
Rogers, the NHL's Canadian presenting sponsor, organized an event where former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle traveled with the Stanley Cup on the TTC subway. Kaberle, a 2011 Stanley Cup champion with the Boston Bruins, took the Cup from Davisville to Union Stations where commuters were seen taking pictures with hockey's greatest prize.
“A lot of good memories seeing the Cup again,” Kaberle told Dave McCarthy of NHL.com. “All the boys, all the willpower, all the work behind it, those two months and then you get to enjoy it afterwards. It was much easier to enjoy it than to play those two and a half months in the playoffs.”
Kaberly wore the red version of the 2024 NHL All-Star jersey designed by recording artist Justin Bieber's drew house label.
Kaberle spent 12 seasons with the Maple Leafs where he scored 83 goals and had 437 assists in 878 games. The 45-year-old still lives in Toronto and helped deliver food to people from his wife's restaurant, Quanto Basta, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also reached out to former teammate Luke Schenn when the defenseman became a Leaf for the second time back in February.
All-Star Weekend takes place Feb. 1-3 at Scotiabank Arena and will have a completely new look this year. The player draft will return as part of NHL All-Star Thursday.
