Toronto Maple Leaf fans — and their haters — will ultimately only care about what the team accomplishes in the 2022 post-season. But nothing can take away from what they’ve done in the 2021-22 regular season, which now officially rates as the best in their 104-season history.

With a 4-2 home victory over the New York Islanders Sunday night, the Leafs collected win No. 50 on the season, marking their first 50-win campaign, eclipsing the franchise record of 49 set in 2017-18. The two points they earned bumped them to 106, which tops the record 105 they had in 2017-18. Already owning new high watermarks for wins and points, the Leafs have six more games on the schedule. Chances are they’ll blow away the previous records. Their .697 points percentage currently holds as a franchise high, too, topping their .688 mark set on a 56-game schedule in 2020-21.

The Leafs, who are 8-1-1 in their past 10 games, hold a six-point edge on the Tampa Bay Lightning for second in the Atlantic Division and home ice in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Tampa has a game in hand. The two teams face off Thursday night in Tampa.
