The Vancouver Canucks have assigned forward Vasily Podkolzin to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, as announced by GM Patrik Alvin on Wednesday morning. Podkolzin, who was selected 10th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, had been traveling with the Canucks throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs but had yet to see any playing time.
During the 2023-24 season, Podkolzin split his time between the AHL and NHL. He spent most of the season in the minors but was recalled shortly before the trade deadline, appearing in 19 games with Vancouver and registering two assists. In the AHL, he played 44 games for Abbotsford, tallying 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points. Despite his limited offensive output, Podkolzin contributed with an increased physical presence, averaging 3.68 hits per game.
The decision to send Podkolzin to Abbotsford comes as the AHL team continues their journey in the Calder Cup playoffs. They are set to face the Ontario Reign in Round 2, giving Podkolzin an opportunity to contribute to their postseason campaign.
Vancouver has remained patient with his development, as he has had to take many trips down Highway 1. While he has shown promise at times during his NHL stint, it appears that the organization believes that additional playing time and responsibility in the AHL playoffs will be crucial in preparing him for the seasons ahead.
