The Vancouver Canucks have announced that general manager Patrik Allvin has signed a multi-year contract extension.
The move comes amid the club’s best season with Allvin at the helm, with the Canucks currently sitting first in the NHL.
“Patrik has done a terrific job in helping us rebuild our hockey team both on and off the ice,” president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford said in a team statement. “He has worked tirelessly to create a new culture and identity that embodies the important attributes of hard work, structure and dedication. With an ever present win the day mentality, Patrik’s leadership skills will be a key driver for our organization moving forward.”
The first Swedish GM in NHL history, Allvin was named the 12th GM in Canucks history back in 2022, taking over for Jim Benning.
“The privilege of staying on to continue what we started here with the Canucks means so very much to me and my family. While our group has taken many positive steps forward, the job is not done. We will continue to push and put in the work necessary to build a championship caliber team.”
Among other moves, Allvin signed J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser to new deals, acquired Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings, and brought in various key depth pieces. The decision to move on from Bruce Boudreau last year has also paid off, with Rick Tocchet quickly becoming one of the top coaches in the NHL.
The upcoming offseason will be another important one for Allvin, with new contracts needed for pending RFAs Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek.
Before joining the Canucks, Allvin served as Pittsburgh’s assistant GM under Rutherford’s guidance. Allvin then took over as interim GM once Rutherford left the Penguins, so the fit was only natural for the two to pair up again in Vancouver.
Vancouver is off for the NHL All-Star Game break, but will have five represenatives in the festivites in Toronto this weekend. The team will return to the ice on Feb. 6 against Carolina for the start of a five-game road trip before returning home to play Detroit on Feb. 15.
