Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary will be out of the lineup on a week-to-week basis due to a lower-body injury.

Fehervary, 24, got hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, as he wiped out behind the Capitals net just two shifts into the game. After seeming to be in some discomfort skating after that, he left the game and did not return for the evening.

It’s some bad luck for Fehervary, as he has otherwise been having the best season of his career with 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 47 games. Over a full 82-game season, that would have been good for 20 points, the first time he’d have hit that mark in his career.

Along with his offense improving, Fehervary has been one of the more disciplined defensemen in the league since making a consistent NHL role for himself in 2021-22. His 0.061 penalty goals above replacement per 60 minutes is tied with Erik Karlsson for 22nd among blueliners with at least 3,500 minutes of ice time in that span.

Fehervary was a 2nd-round pick of the Capitals in the 2018 NHL Draft, and after making his NHL debut for a six-game stint in the 2019-20 season, he established himself as an everyday NHLer in 2021-22. He has spent the entirety of his four-season NHL career in Washington.

Fehervary is currently in the first year of a three-year contract with a $2.675 million cap hit, one he signed in the 2023 offseason as a restricted free agent.

The Capitals currently sits in sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 24-21-8 record, which is six points behind the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington will look to build off of  their 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens when they host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST.
