Washington Capitals president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today that the Capitals have placed forward Sonny Milano on Injured Reserve (IR).

The Capitals also announced that they have recalled forward Joe Snively from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Hershey Bears.

Milano has recorded four goals and four assists for eight points in 23 games this season. In January, the 27-year-old signed a three-year contract extension, his new deal carries a $1.9 million annual cap hit through the end of the 2025–26 season.

The Columbus Blue Jackets originally selected Milano in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft. The six-foot, 194-pound winger spent parts of five seasons with the Blue Jackets, registering 14 goals in 55 games in 2017–18, before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2020. He developed chemistry with Ducks’ superstar Trevor Zegras, scoring a highlight reel goal that captivated all hockey fans. Ultimately, the Ducks did not qualify Milano and he hit the free-agent market.

Snively has recorded 21 points in 25 games with Hershey this season. During the 2022-23 campaign, Snively appeared in 12 games with Washington, recording two goals and two assists. Snively helped lead the Bears to a Calder Cup Championship after scoring 15 points in 20 playoff contests.

The Herdon, Virginia native became the first Virginian-born player to suit up for the Capitals in 2021-22. The 27-year-old recorded seven points, including a three-point effort on Feb. 10, 2022, against the Montreal Canadiens. Snively has appeared in 24 career NHL games with Washington, recording 11 points.

The Caps currently have a 14-8-3 record and sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division, they get ready to take on the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
