Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Watch: Alex Ovechkin scores goal No. 801, tying Gordie Howe for the second-most goals in NHL history

Only one player in the history of the NHL has scored more goals than Washington Capitals' future Hall of Famer, Alex Ovechkin.

On Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets, Ovechkin tallied goal No. 801, tying the great Gordie Howe for second on the all-time list. At 18:22 into the first period, Ovechkin took a drop pass from Dylan Strome a stride inside the blue-line before firing a wrister by Jets' goaltender David Rittich.

Ovechkin now trails only Wayne Gretzky on the all-time goals list. "The Great One" hasn't played a game in over two decades, but he still has a healthy 94-goal lead on Ovechkin. However, if Ovechkin plays two more years at his current pace, equaling Gretzky's 20 seasons in the league, he'll likely end his career as the NHL's all-time leading scorer.

Last week, Ovechkin became only the third player in NHL history to surpass 800 career goals, doing so in style with a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Already the all-time leader in power-play goals (292), Ovechkin recently passed Hall of Famer Ray Bourque for the most shots in NHL history, a number that's still growing.

The 37-year-old is also on the cusp of some more NHL history. Ovechkin is only nine game-winning goals away from tying Jaromir Jagr for the all-time lead. He already has three this season.
