Former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Louis Domingue might be most famous for spicy pork, his intermission meal as he backed up Casey DeSmith before Game 1 of the Penguins’ 2022 Round One matchup against the New York Rangers. After his unhealthy meal and an injury to DeSmith, Domingue was forced into duty during overtime, leading the Penguins to victory. Spicy pork became a catchphrase.
Friday night, Domingue earned something close to a double-eagle rarity: a goalie goal.
Domingue’s Hartford Wolfpack led the Springfield Falcons 4-3.
Domingue, 32, stopped a dump-in and, from his knees, whipped the puck about 180 feet into Springfield’s empty net. The win pushed Hartford into the AHL playoffs.
It was Domingue’s first career goal. In 26 games with Hartford of the AHL, Domingue has a .908 save percentage. The Penguins’ former third-goalie played one NHL game this season for the New York Rangers, beating the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on Nov. 19.
Domingue has played in 143 NHL games with New York, the Penguins, Calgary, Vancouver, New Jersey, and Arizona. He has a 60-60-10 record.
Before the 2022 season, Domingue was bounced around the league as a depth goalie, especially during the pandemic when he played for three NHL teams and two AHL teams. He opened up about the mental toll it took.
