Looking to resurrect his career, forward Sonny Milano scored his first goal since joining the Washington Capitals this season Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Milano’s goal came epically following a chaotic sequence.

Capitals forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel received a match penalty after a devastating hit to the head of Lightning defenseman Cal Foote nearly two minutes into the second period. A brawl broke out during the play review between Capitals’ Garnet Hathaway and Lightning’s Patrick Maroon. They each received five minutes penalties for fighting and 10 minutes for game misconduct.

When the chaos settled, the Lightning received a five-minute power play. The Capitals killed the penalty, and at the end of the power play, John Carlson passed the puck to Milano as he came out of the penalty box on a breakaway before he beat Tampa Bay’s goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

The goal gave Washington a 2-0 lead. Milano, who also had an assist, later scored his second goal in the third period, capping the Capitals’ 5-1 win inside the Capital One Arena in Washington.

Following the game, Milano said it felt “pretty good” to score.

Milano signed a one-year deal with the Capitals last month following his release from Calgary after the preseason. Friday was his fourth game with Washington.
