Capitals' Alex Ovechkin passes Jaromir Jagr for third on NHL career goals list

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored in the third period Tuesday against the New York Islanders and moved into third place on the NHL's all-time goal list.

Ovechkin, 36, scored two goals last week in a win against the Calgary Flames that pulled him even with Jaromir Jagr for third place. On Tuesday, he scored the 767th goal of his career with a lightning quick shot immediately after a face-off.

The goal gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead with just under five minutes left, but the Islanders tied the score about three minutes later with a goal from Anders Lee. Washington later won the game in a shootout.

Ovechkin has spent his entire career with the Capitals after he was picked with the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He's now 34 goals behind Gordie Howe for second in NHL history and 127 goals behind Wayne Gretzky for the top spot.
