Devils and Canucks Trade Conversation Confirmed By Insider

Elliotte Friedman reports that the Devils and Canucks have discussed a trade that would bring defenseman Quinn Hughes to New Jersey. It’s important to note that the NHL insider stressed nothing is imminent.

The conversation apparently took place after the Canucks sent out the memo to the rest of the NHL that UFAs and veterans were potentially available. “I do not believe there is anything imminent. I don’t even know that they’re anywhere far along. But I do believe that a conversation was had about where things stand and where they might be going,” Friedman said.

Hughes’ contract expires after next season, and with Vancouver struggling (now last in the NHL standings), his future is uncertain. There are many who believe he’s already made up his mind that he’ll either test free agency or request a trade at some point. Others believe he ideally would like to end up in New Jersey, playing alongside his brothers.

The Devils—home to brothers Jack and Luke—could explore a trade but face salary-cap hurdles. New Jersey is also eyeing other upgrades while dealing with injuries and a recent losing streak.

In 23 games this season, Quinn’s recorded two goals and 22 points, averaging 27.5 minutes of ice-time per night. Of late, there has been chatter that Hughes has grown impatient with the way things are trending in Vancouver.

Friedman also mentioned the Devils have been making calls on other potential deals. Those include Steven Stamkos and Ryan O’Reilly.
