Insider Reveals Concerning News on Connor McDavid Extension With the Edmonton Oilers

Connor McDavid is expected to extend his stay in Edmonton this off-season, but according to a report, the star captain is yet to begin discussions with the team.

The Edmonton Oilers fell just short in the Stanley Cup Finals once again in 2025, and with the team on the verge of glory, the organization seemingly believes that this is the core that can get it done.

The most important part of that core is captain Connor McDavid, who is currently set to be a free agent in the summer of 2026, although all indications thus far point to the two parties getting an extension done this summer like they did with Leon Draisaitl a season ago.

However, the latest report from TSN's Chris Johnston isn't one that Oilers fans will want to hear, as he is reporting that as of right now, no extension talks have taken place between the Oilers and McDavid's representation.

That likely isn't the biggest issue, as he's proven thus far how loyal he is to the organization, and with training camp just a matter of weeks away, it's likely that something will get done when the team gets together once more.

However, if there's any glimpse that McDavid isn't going to return to Edmonton as a free agent, this entire situation could get very intriguing as the organization and their long-time captain need to weigh up how things will look moving forward.

Ultimately though, there's no reason for Oilers fans to worry just yet, as Draisaitl's deal wasn't signed until September last season, and while it's not a great sign that they haven't begun talking an extension yet, both parties know just how important a Stanley Cup is to Edmonton, so things could get done very quickly.
