Jake Oettinger welcomes EBUG change that could help NHL goalies last longer

Jake Oettinger isn't usually the loudest voice in the room, but when it comes to protecting goalies, the Dallas Stars netminder isn't afraid to speak up.

The NHL's latest change to its emergency backup goalie (EBUG) policy may seem small to fans. After all, these third-stringers rarely see ice time.

But for those who live the reality of the grind, like Oettinger, this adjustment could quietly make a major difference.

In the past, NHL goalies handled everything at practice, even when their bodies were screaming for rest. Skaters could take optional days. Goalies? Not so much.

Someone had to be in net whether it made sense or not.

Oettinger believes the new EBUG rule will help Stars goalies manage fatigue and stay effective longer

Starting in 2026-27, each team will now carry a full-time EBUG, not just rely on someone in the building during home games. These backup goalies won't have NHL experience, but they'll travel and practice with the team throughout the season.

For Oettinger, this is a game-changer.

"This is a long time coming," he said Friday via The Athletic "I think longevity-wise it could help goalies stay healthy, and goalies play longer into their career."

Considering how much Dallas has leaned on him the past few years, the timing couldn't be better. The NHL is moving to an 84-game schedule soon.

"Even if it's three skates a month that you take off, throughout the course of a season you put your pads on 20 less times, and that could be five more games you can play," Oettinger said. "It gives you the opportunity to be more fresh, and gives the performance guys more opportunity for you to pick your spots."

Every extra minute of rest will matter, especially come playoff time.

Honestly, I think it's a smart shift by the NHL. More support, less wear, and hopefully longer careers for goalies like Oettinger.
