Leon Draisaitl Addresses Oilers Situation After Tough Loss to Rangers

The Edmonton Oilers took another stumble Thursday night, as they failed to close out the New York Rangers in a frustrating 4-3 overtime loss at Rogers Place in Alberta.

The Oilers seemed like they were on their way to following up their 6-3 victory over the Utah Mammoth at home on Tuesday with a second victory in a row, but they ended up surrendering a two-goal lead in the third period before ultimately faltering in overtime.

J.T. Miller served as the hero New York needed in extra time, with the Rangers captain finding the back of the net 2:49 into overtime.

Before that, the Rangers erased a multi-goal deficit in the third frame with consecutive goals from Braden Schneider and Taylor Raddysh.

Oilers star center Leon Draisaitl did not hide his feelings about the infuriating nature of Edmonton's loss.

"Yeah, it's just self-inflicting mistakes," the former Hart Memorial Trophy winner said about the Oilers' collapse (via Edmonton's X account).

"That's all it is. It's nothing magical that the other teams are doing. We're beating ourselves right now. We have to clean up."

Edmonton trailed early in the game, with Rangers forward Jonny Brodzinski netting the matchup's first goal, but the Oilers found their groove and scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. As New York's defense tightened up in the final frame, the Oilers' attack struggled to make things happen, leading to Edmonton's fourth overtime in the 2025-26 NHL season.

The Rangers made a spirited effort on both ends of the ice to force overtime, as they dominated the possession battle in the third period, where they took a total of 22 shots on goal to just 12 by the Oilers.

"The first 40 [minutes] were decent. It was pretty good. Turnovers just kind of turned the game," commented Draisaitl, who missed all three shots on goal but came away with an assist.

The 5-4-3 Oilers can turn things around as soon as this coming Saturday when they host the Chicago Blackhawks for the last leg of a three-game homestand.
