Lyon recalled from Chicago

With Carolina Hurricanes’ netminder Antti Raanta going down with injury in Saturday’s loss to the Florida Panthers, the Canes announced Monday that Alex Lyon would be recalled from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves to backup Frederik Andersen.

Lyon has some NHL experience, with 22 games played over the past four seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. Lyon has a 6-7-2 career record with a 3.21 GAA and .893 save percentage. He played in six games in 2020-21, going 1-3-1 with a 3.33 GAA and .893 SV %.

With the Wolves in 2021, Lyon is 2-1-0 with a 2.35 GAA and .891 SV%. Lyon signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Hurricanes this offseason to provide some organizational depth between the pipes, and now he’s being called on early.

As far as Raanta goes, Canes’ head coach Rod Brind’Amour had no update when he spoke with members of the media Sunday.

“I saw him last night after the game and he seemed really good,” Brind’Amour said. “I don’t know exactly what is going to happen there. We sent him home to get evaluated. We’ll see where that all leads.”

The Canes will hit the ice again Tuesday night in Tampa for a meeting with the Lightning before returning home for a back-to-back with the Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues Friday and Saturday.
