NHL Notebook: Sidney Crosby reaches 1,700 points
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Sidney Crosby has reached another milestone in his illustrious career.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the St. Louis Blues, defeating the Central Division team 6-3. With assists on the third and fourth goals, Crosby became just the ninth player to reach the 1,700-point mark. For good measure, Crosby added a goal to give the Penguins some insurance.

Crosby joins a list of Hall of Famers. Wayne Gretzky leads the pack with 2,857 points, followed by Jaromír Jágr’s 1,921 points, Mark Messier’s 1,887 points, Gordie Howe’s 1,850 points, Ron Francis’ 1798 points, Marcel Dionne’s 1,771 points, Steve Yzerman’s 1,755 points, and Mario Lemieux’s 1,723 points.

Speaking of Lemieux, surpassing the Penguins’ legend is Crosby’s next milestone, as he needs just 23 points to surpass his former teammate. It’s almost guaranteed he’ll reach the mark this season, as the Penguins are off to a 7-2-1 start.

Jett Luchanko assigned to the Ontario Hockey League

From a future Hall of Famer to a young player trying to make his way in the National Hockey League, Philadelphia Flyers forward Jett Luchanko was sent to the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm on Monday.

Luchanko, 19, was drafted 13th overall by the Flyers in the 2024 draft. After four games in 2024-25, he was sent back to the OHL and participated in the 2025 World Juniors, before playing nine regular season games and seven post-season games in the American Hockey League. Like last season, the forward played four games in the NHL before being sent to the Storm.

The London, Ontario native has a strong chance of making Team Canada once again this holiday season and should dominate the OHL in his fourth season in the league.

Quinn Hughes listed as day-to-day

Before Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks defenceman wasn’t in the lineup with what is being called a day-to-day lower-body injury.

Hughes is a premier defenceman in the NHL, scoring 17 goals and 92 points in 82 games in 2023-24, en route to a Norris Trophy. When healthy last season, the left-shot defenceman was effective, scoring 16 goals and 76 points in just 68 games.

So far this season, Hughes’ production has waned a bit, as he has just one goal through seven games. Still, the Canucks defeated the Oilers 4-3 in overtime. His replacement in the lineup, Victor Mancini, left Sunday’s game with an injury.

Other players with recent injuries are Robert Thomas, Jake Neighbours, Dylan Strome, and Brad Marchand.
